Port Louis District

The Central market in the capital city is one of the most attractive places in Port Louis. It is also one of the busiest and nosiest place in the capital. A variety of colorful ,ripe and attractive fruits and vegetables are exposed on stalls. Items and articles of all sorts are available. Tourists can also be attracted by the low local food prices and the artisan varieties as well as souvenirs of Mauritius.

The Natural History Museum is found in the heart of Port Louis opposite Jardin de la compagnie and is indeed the oldest museum of the island and it was opened in 1842. You can discover all the distinct birds and the famous dodo with all histories of different extinct and living creatures. It is famous because the various artifacts reflect the history, art and culture of Mauritius.

The Blue Penny Museum is found the caudan water front, one of the most attractive shopping and leisure centre in Port Louis. The various stamps of the Mauritius Post Office are exposed at the Blue Penny Musuem you can also view items of various high heritage of our island.

The Caudan waterfront is one most beautiful picturesque place of our island with its modern architectural buildings mixed with remnants of the past. The most beautiful shopping centre is composed of about two hundred shops, 3 cinemas, casinos, banks, entertainment activities, restaurants with different tastes, food court, Labourdonnais Hotel and Le Suffren Hotel,offices, information for tourists and guidance and yet all the facilities you wish. It is also reputed for meeting point and one of most entertainment point of Port Louis

Marie Reine De La Paix is also a picturesque place at the foot of Signal Mountain It is sacred area hosted the Pope Jean Paul II mass when he kissed the soil of Mauritius. We can also have a view of the city of Port Louis from there,Robert Edouard Hard Garden at Les Salines

Citadel is another place where you can view Port Louis and the harbour. It's layout is composed with heavily-fortified rectangular bricks of military architecture.

The Port-Louis Citadel has also a museum, where you will find an excellent collection of model ships, weapons, paintings and other historic models and it is also dedicated to the history of the Indies Company.

Champ de Mars is the most famous entertainment place of Port Louis. Champ de Mars was founded in 1812 by the Mauritius Turf Club which still exists. The one and only held horse racing area of Mauritius where such activities take place over a certain period; usually from May to November each year on a weekly basis. The greatest event of the race period is called Maiden and occurs each September. To assist to the racing course is one of the main hobbies of the Mauritian gamblers and also a tourist attraction. During the racing period different lotteries are available and different betting points are operational over the island.

Domaine Les Pailles is one of the most famous tourist destinations of Mauritius. It is spread over a huge area of 3000 acres on the foothills of the Moka Range. You can explore the area of Domaine Les Pailles coaches drawn by horses while passing by a replica of an early sugar factory, windmill, rum distillery, spice garden and riding stables and adventurous safaris in Land Rovers. Activities for the kids are also available which include pony rides and wagons.
